Iolite has inherited pleochroism properties from it’s ‘parent’ stone- Cordierite. This causes color shifts when observed from different angles. This is neat because Vikings could use Iolite, or clear Cordierite, to steer on cloudy overcast days, observing the polarity of the light angles based on how the stone color changed. This sight and delight also gives Iolite another name- Vikings Compass.
